Our History
Our History
Established in February 2023 as a Research Project Lab at Sampoerna University, the center was born from a visionary initiative supported and primarily funded by the Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF). This collaboration aligns with PSF's broader mission to drive innovative solutions for environmental challenges while providing significant benefits to society.
In its early stages, the laboratory focused exclusively on transforming plastic waste into valuable components for asphalt mixtures, operating under the name Plastic Waste for Sustainable Pavement Center. However, as research capabilities expanded, the lab’s scope evolved. Beginning in 2025, the center broadened its focus to include the processing of various other solid waste materials, such as cigarette butts and recycled tyre crumbs, into sustainable pavement resources.
To reflect this growing research diversity and its commitment to broader environmental impact, the laboratory is now officially known as the Sampoerna University Sustainable Pavement Research and Innovation Center (SU-SPRIC). Today, SU-SPRIC continues to develop practical, high-performance solutions for road construction, aiming to implement real-world applications that improve road quality, reduce environmental footprints, and promote a global culture of recycling.
Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF) was established as a social organization with the aim of assisting in the development of Indonesia as a nation. In 2015, the organization was transformed into a social business which recognizes the importance of education in nation-building.
As the first social business in the country, PSF works with its partners and donors to make quality international education available to more Indonesian students. This is in line with the desire to create a high-calibre workforce composed of well-educated Indonesians who are ready to lead the country and contribute towards its development.
Sampoerna University is the only university in Indonesia that offers an American-style higher education experience. As part of the Sampoerna Schools System, it represents the culmination of the nation’s only integrated system of schools based on international standards of quality.
Sampoerna University is a private, non-denominational, not-for-profit university that is licensed and accredited by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia. Set up with national and international standards, Sampoerna University is uniquely qualified to make substantive contributions to society through education.
